Social Responsibilities And Business Ethics
A growing concern among the civil society nowadays is the ruthlessness with which big companies understand to do business. There is a real question whether these companies understand notions such as social responsibilities and business ethics. In our developed society the old Machiavellian thinking, in which any kind of means necessary for obtaining a desired outcome are viable, is outdated. Indeed, nothing should be more important than obtaining the desired goal of the company, as long as it functions within the rules of a decent society. This means that not anything goes, and after the economic crisis we just encountered, it is pretty fair to say that ruthlessness in business doesn’t pay off. It’s going to take probably another decade until these big companies understand that social responsibilities and business ethics are not only the morally correct way of doing business but in the end, also the most profitable way.
So, what are the specific ways in which a company can exercise business ethics? Social responsibilities also fall into the category of business ethics, and it refers to what big businesses give back to the community.
· Getting involved in charities that are helpful for the community. A way in which companies give back to the communities they chose to do business in is by funding local charities. It is very important to know that a happy worker is a more efficient worker, and thus a company can obtain more profit if it understands what it needs to do to make workers happy. A company should be proactive in getting in touch with community leaders and trying to learn as much as they can about the community. If they can involve themselves in the key issues of the community than there is no question that the community will give back. And this is very important to a company because it ensures that there is no sense of unrest amongst its workers, and furthermore, that the workers have a feeling of duty towards making the company better and more profitable. If a company dedicates itself to serving the community than all the workers will feel that the success of that company ensures the prosperity of the local community, which is one of the biggest incentives a manager, could wish for.
· Getting involved in the educational process in the community. A big company knows that its continued success depends on the kind of people that get hired to do the job. Uprooting entire families isn’t always a desired outcome, so companies should strive to get as many highly qualified workers as they can from the local community where they do their business. This means of course getting involved in the educational process. The community has an important voice when it comes to choosing public schools curricula. Therefore, a company should try to get from the community leaders involved in making school a perfect start towards the business the company deals in. This is done by changing the curricula to focus on the domains the company is interested in. The company can boost the interest of students by offering internships and free trainings, and always scouting for the most talented and promising students, and offering them jobs.
· Another big part of social responsibilities and business ethics focuses on environment protection. A company should try to reduce to a minimum any kind of pollution it produces, and at the same time, it needs to get involved in programs public or private that strive toward a cleaner environment thru sponsorships. The public perception towards big companies when it comes to pollution is very bad, so every company should try to change that state of mind. Sponsoring the construction of new parks, or cleaning old ones can prove to be an excellent marketing strategy as well.
In essence, when it comes to social responsibilities and business ethics all companies should strive to become a role model in the field. This shouldn’t even be done for the sake of morality because in essence the reputation of a company is their final products main asset. So a corrupt company, which appears as such in the public perception, is going to be a much less profitable one than an honest company. So you can say that business ethics are actually profitable. A company should get involved in all aspects of the community that offers them their workforce. A happy community that feels attached to the company that offers them most of their jobs will be one of the most important benefits for any company. Happy workers are efficient workers. A company shouldn’t rely only on its financial wealth, because that is not enough to change the minds of people. Community leaders should always be consulted in all problems that any company has with its workers. Communication and respect between the company and the community is the only key for success for both parties involved.
