In order to survive the monotony of every day routine life, it is a must that we give ourselves a break. There are occasional routine breaks that seem to fly away in an instant. But again, there are long (and often boring breaks) that do not want to pass. How can we pass these breaks, these leisure periods productively? I am not of course talking about breaks in between works or holidays in between offices. I am rather pointing towards those rather long and boring vacations, unwanted in some cases. For example, people are often advised to avail rest in order to completely recover from a physical or mental discomfort. Or, sometimes, we just get unnoticed breaks from our jobs and have nothing to do when we are home in between jobs. These are some of the most boring times we spend, and the worst part is that we feel very demoralizing, bored and even depressed when we are on such vacations or breaks.

So, how can we spend such leisure productively? There are indeed some ways of spending vacations effectively that renders us two favors, first, we get to spend our time relatively quickly and we can at times earn something too. There are various ways to spend leisure productively. Some of them are given below:

·        These breaks are some of the most effective times to build a bond with the most important people in your lives-your family! Sad but true, we often end up going emotionally away from the closest persons in our lives. When we end up getting long term breaks or holidays, whether we want it or not, we can make great use of this time by spending time with our loved ones. This does not necessarily mean that we have to go on vacations to a faraway place. Indeed, it does not mean even to go on vacation to any nearby place as well. If you can make time for that then its fine. You can actually spend good amount of time, and enjoy, with your parents, spouse, children by participating in the household chores that you previously had little time to do. For example, you can go grocery shopping for the family, you can pick up the kids from school, and you can contribute time while preparing the monthly / annual budget. By doing all these apparently trivial chores, you will be involved in your family more than ever, physically as well as emotionally. You would not be the mere money machine for the family; alternatively, you will get to decide together where the cash should go.

·        If you are a student and are having a long break, you can search and find plenty of works online and on campus. For example you can take up writing for a fee. You can continue it even when you have regained your work. Plus, those of you who have the inner zeal of writing, this creative nook in your life will give your confidence a boost and save you some monotony.

·        In order to spend leisure productively, you can restart a hobby that you had to let go as you had to surrender to a busy life. You can start the hobby again at full throttle and then may be continue in a small scale and slower pace when you start working again. But do not let go of your hobby. When we have a hobby, we are in the leadership position, taking care of an entire entity; this teaches us valuable lesson for our future ahead.

·        One of the most noble, a bit time consuming work that requires a lot of devotion and motivation, is social work. It can be any type of social work-working for the elderly at old homes, taking care of orphans at orphanage, rendering educational services to the illiterate, working for the physically and mentally challenged, working at rehabilitation centers, working at post calamity centers and so on. If you are dedicated enough and continue, you will derive great pleasure from such works.

All of the above tasks are but some of the examples to spend break. If you are determined to make good use of your time, then you will find plenty of jobs of such nature. You just have to take the first initiative, take the first step. If you don’t, you would not see the most obvious jobs floating in front of you. And if you have the guts, time and patience to start and continue working, you will be doing yourself a huge favor and receive the results instantly!
