Staff development plan is a program which formulates in order to provide a perfect guidance and encouragement with a vision to gain more and more knowledge, to build and increase the required skills and lastly in order to develop the abilities that are important in performing a particular task. Staff development plan is a coordinated effort by the employers so that their employees can learn how to perform their job with perfection. Another prime objective of this plan is continuous improvement of the organization through the growth and development of the individual to increase the effectiveness of all staff.

 

Staff development plans are the written documents which provide details of the way in which the staff members will improve their performance at a particular event. It is generally written during the time of annual performance reviews, although they can be written at other times of the year.

 

Often organizations feel difficulty in preparing a staff development plan. The process can be made simpler if the employers consider some basic facts about a good staff development plan.

 

Staff development plan should include:

 

 A mission statement- A mission statement is a face of any program. If you want to have a flawless staff development plan, then you must need a mission statement which should be time bounded, and includes every aspect of your approach.

 

Staff development policy- This is important as employees can be relieved after reading them. The policies are important to keep employees in control and to have a same mechanism throughout the organization.

 

Tie into strategic plan- After making adequate policies, you should tie them into a strategic plan. The plan should be in such a manner that it does not interrupt any work and everybody should make the best out of it.

 

Accountability (administration –trainer(s)-supervisor-individual)- There should be a proper accountability for everyone in the organization. No matter at what position one is sitting, he should be accountable for his part of services. And the rules should be strict enough to keep all the staff members accountable.

 

Evaluation methods- Last but definitely not the least is the evaluation method. Every organization should have an evaluation method and it should be known to everyone. By evaluating the performance of each staff member, you can judge the potential of your staff development plan.

Steps in creating a Staff Development Plan

No plan is complete without knowing its actual need. So, first you have to determine the needs of the development of your staff. This task can be facilitated by asking directly to the staff members or by asking to the superiors. You should note every key point that would help you in making a perfect staff development plan.

 

After determining the development needs, you must ensure about the evaluation method. The method should be adequate, like whether your organization wants to evaluate the performance in quantitative or qualitative terms.

 

The next step is to design ways or methods in which the development needs can be fulfilled. This may include specific training courses, attendance at seminars, cross training with other employees or an increase in time spent on specific work activities. Generally, employees think that improvement means a hike in their salary package but improvement can also be shown in the working method or in creating more career opportunities in the organization itself.

 

A good staff development plan should have a time limit. Without time limit, any plan would be vague and it cannot be implemented in an effective manner. So, you should decide a time limit for your plan. Time considerations should also be for training schedules and other management exercise which are planned in order to improve the skills of the staff members.

 

Take a final print out of the document and circulate them among all the members, so that everyone should have a clear picture about the task they are expected to perform. Time to time circulars should be there to inform the staff about the training and development schedules. Thus, a staff development plan is very helpful in achieving the desired result.
