Stop Moving So Fast – Lesson I Learned
About an year ago my sister, who is a doctor, told me that I should take less work and give my best on them rather than taking too much work and failing on quality. What she exactly meant is clearly comprehendible but the true taste of what she said I got recently. In my previous post making money on internet – How my online business got started I had talked about the whole story of me taking on the SEO work in parallel to my blog. It is only recently that I realized that I have too many projects in my hands and that I could not do justice to all the projects.
I work with small team but the SEO work is currently being handled by me only. It is the job which involves lot of hard work. Recently there were so many projects on my plate that suddenly my schedule all got messed up. I had taken vacation in May and then a week off in June that added to problems. In all these days what has suffered most are my projects mainly because I had done a very poor job till now in scheduling them.
So about two weeks back I had stopped taking new projects and even bidding for new ones. My bidding account is closed for the moment and I am completely focusing on what I have in hand. As a result in past 3 to 4 days I saw some success and have been able to bill the customer. My schedule is now clear and in a week I made sure that each project gets the requisite attention. I now plan to complete all projects and create enough bandwidth for me to blog more and take handful projects in near future.
The verdict of this whole episode was clear- I was moving so fast that it had started to take toll on me. I needed an immediate dose of confidence to bounce back and take situation on my own hands. My game plan was simple
1) Consolidate what I have – It was important to take a step back and focus on everything which I was running in parallel. My work is mainly focused on blogging, SEO and Link building. In all these months everything had gone haywire and I took stock of the situation. Consolidating helped me chalk out the plan for next phase. Not taking new order was one of main step of this stage.
2) Deliver quality- It is important for me to deliver quality. Clearly, except for linkbuilding, my work had suffered in both blogging and SEO work. I knew where I was lacking and at this point was ready to get back with bang again.
3) Stage A comeback- Staging a comeback is not easy especially when you had become a slave of your earlier schedule. For me the routine had to be broken and I had to get back on right schedule. This step made me clear the rut and get me ready for comeback no matter how much effort or sacrifices it involved
4) Register Small Wins- Winning is a habit and if you are not winning right now then better you should act now. It was important for me to register small wins to build confidence. Success is all about going from one win to another. The major thing I did here is that I opted for small goals and registered small wins. Soon this gave me enough confidence to go after the large goals.
5) Build Confidence- Winning built confidence in me. Confidence is much needed and small wins ensures that I can take big challenges from now on. This moment also ensured that my confidence gets restored in my strategy and I can clearly see the path ahead.
6) Concentrate on low Hanging Fruits First- For every business now I had a plan. I wanted to concentrate on things I could complete fast. My plan now has clear path where things would be completed as per schedule and the schedule would be based on doing easier things first. Like I said small wins, the easier opportunities were low hanging fruits and conquering them instilled confidence in me.
7) Get Back On Track- The whole exercise was done to get back on track. It was planned in manner that had brought me success in past. I have always broken problem into pieces and solved them one by one and this time it was same approach.
Work is under control now and I am back to blogging. I know my blog has suffered recently but I am totally committed to devote more time to it. I have to bring my readers back and instill the confidence that I had earlier. In coming months you would see more work and I would appreciate your comments. I have plans and I am sure things gonna work right way from here.
