Strange Animals In The World
There are a lot of strange animals in the world, and many people who are curious to find out more things about them. That is why, in the following paragraphs I will talk about some of the weirdest animals out there. Some species have evolved certain features that are necessity for their survival, but which for us, at a quick look make no sense whatsoever. Of course the fact that an animal is strange is just a perception, because if the roles where reversed, I’m sure that lots of animals would find us strange. S, here is a list of what I consider to be the world’s strangest animals:
1. Echidna. The echidna is part of the monotreme family. This family of creatures has one of the most peculiar characteristics in the animal kingdom: they lay eggs, but they feed their young with milk. The Echidna looks a lot like a hedgehog; the main difference is due to the size, the echidna being bigger. Its spikes are black at the base and white towards the tip. Its snout acts at the same time as a mouth and a nose. It is long and slender, and that is because of the food the echidna eats: ants and termites. The form of the snout helps the echidna to catch it’s pray easier.
2. Platypus. The platypus is the other surviving member of the monotreme family. Like the echidna it is an egg laying mammal. It is definitely one of the strangest animals in the world due to its appearance. It looks very much like a genetic experiment gone wrong: a strange mix, between a duck and a beaver. The platypus has otter like webbed feat, and posses another curious characteristic which is the fact that it has venom. Male platypuses have a spur on their hind leg thru which they deliver the venom. It is not lethal, but it is pretty dangerous. The platypus has a beak that look remarkably like a duck. Its mouth is situated on the underside of the beak. This beak is used for electroreception, thru which platypuses detect their pray. The beak has sensors which can detect the electric charge produced by muscle contraction. The tail of the platypus looks remarkably similar to that of a beaver. But it doesn’t use its tail in the same way. The platypus uses its tail to deposit fat. Both the [platypus and the echidna are native to Australia.
3. The Tapir. The tapir is a pig like creature that lives in tropical jungles. It has a very weird appearance due to its prehensile snout. This highly flexible sensitive and muscular structure helps it to grab foliage that would otherwise be out of reach. The tapir is a bigger than a pig weighing up to 300 kilos and is very well adapted to its environment. Along with its prehensile short snout, the tapir has hoofed toes, four on the front feet, and three on the hind feet, which makes it move easier thru the muddy terrain of the tropical jungle. Its prehensile snout gives the tapir a very weird appearance, and that’s why I consider it to be one of the strangest animals in the world.
4. The Gecko. The gecko is a small type of lizard found throughout the world, in warm climates. This family of lizards includes one of the smallest lizards in the world: Jaragua Sphaero, which measures from tail to snout a mere 16 mm. Some strange characteristics of geckos include the fact that all species in the gecko family have no eyelids. Instead, geckos have a clear membrane covering their eyes, which they clean with their tongues. The characteristic that made me put the gecko on the list of the strangest animals of the world is the fact that they can climb smooth vertical surfaces. These lizards seem like thy have suction cups on their toes, and they will stick to any kind of surface. His amazing ability is down to the way the souls of the feet of the gecko evolved. Scientists have found that there are tiny hairs on the toes of the geckoes, and that these hairs have split ends. These hairs are so tiny, that one toe contains over 100000 hairs. The split ends, for every hair are anywhere from one hundred to a thousand for every hair. The form of these endings enables the so called Van der Waals effect, which refers to interaction between the molecules that form the endings of these microscopic hairs and the molecules of the surface.
I think these are some of the strangest animals in the world. Of course there are many other weird animals that didn’t make the list, and I’m sure lots of you out there are starting their own lists. I think everybody should enjoy the amazing variety of creatures we have living on our planet, and research in biology should evolve rapidly in the following years because we still haven’t managed to unravel all the secrets of the natural world.
