Why Your Team Need People Better Than You

20 January 2010 No Comment

The word Team gets its true meaning from the members who are part of it. The effectiveness of the team depends upon both the team work and the efficiency of the each individual. For the success of any organization the core has always been the success of the teams that comprise an organization. Make them inefficient and you have problems all around. The capabilities of individual team members are as important as their ability to interact and act in tandem.  However, the first point has always been who comprises your team and how capable they are to take things forward.

We always look out for best people to become part of our team. We go through numerous process of hiring and discussions in order to zero in on candidates whom we feel are the best. The process in itself is loaded with too much investment that a hiring industry has been built around it. But does the process ends here? Certainly Not. It is just the start of the story. The actual test is when the team member joins the club and starts to perform. There are numerous factors that come into play that has the capability to extract or suppress the best of any person. And the biggest factor is the Manager, Team Leader or the person who is the in charge.

The process in most cases has always been

1) The best person gets hired.

2) He works hard and starts to get famous

3) Soon the manager gets insecure about it

As a result

1) The manager suppresses the team members and their growth

2) The environment gets too much political

3) There is dissatisfaction all around.

The Manager from future makes sure to

1) Exercise his supreme control

2) Makes sure every person remains or performs within defined limits

3) Keep personal ego more than the growth of the company.

This happens and is the biggest reason of dissatisfaction in many companies. People crib, complain, and when they see nothing can be done they leave. The loss that company incur is too huge but mostly unaccountable.

The managers fail to realize the common analogy

1) They hold the driver seat of a vehicle

2) The vehicle is pushed by team members

3) How far the vehicle can go depends upon individual team members and their team work.

And the principal is dead simple

1) You Hold the Driver Seat and hence you own the rise or fall of the team.

2) Individual team members give output and hence you want their best to come out

3) All output combined gives the output of the team

And in this process the team members know

1) Who runs the show?

2) How they are part of the mix and not the entire mix in itself

3) How best they are being utilized by the person sitting at driver’s seat

And it has always been the thumb Rule- If the team does best it is always because of the person managing the show. Remove him and the team is bound to fall apart.

People realize this. Companies realize this. And this is the reason the Manager position has an enormous respect for itself.

So why feel insecure. It is important to get the team members

1) Who are the best

2) Make them give their best

3) Combine the best of all to deliver the best

If the manager remove mental hindrance and hire best people

1) Team member grows and would push the manager up.

2) The manager moves up and he pulls the team members up too.

3) The process continues and works best when both work to their best abilities.

Put bad manager or bad team member. And the team is headed for disaster.

So the moral

 1) Hire the best people.

2) Hire the people better than you

3) Get pushed to higher orbit.

Go against this law and you would have an average team. The team full of issues and problems.

And if you still feel insecure from the members of your team. It is time to Wake Up Rockstar.
