Ways Of Handling Work Overload


Often our life becomes synonymous to work even without our realization. If you are your own boss, as in if you are running your own company or business then it is not surprising at all to assume your work is taking over your life most likely. Every individual should know ways of handling work overload unless this taking over thing will affect your personal life very badly.

I know running a business is not a piece of cake, or being at one of the top most position of a company neither. Working in weekends, longs hours in office days, travelling now and then become common chore of your life and eventually the normal daily activities become uncommon to your lifestyle. You do not know how much you are depriving yourself and also your family. Remember too much of anything is not good. That is why you need to control yourself before it is too late.

It is not always easy to manage work overload especially after current recession. Work overload become more familiar after this bad economic period as most of the companies were focused on cutoffs and layoffs in order to minimize the loss. But if you do not know how to keep your work load in a normal limit then you will find the side effects of work overload is grinding your eventually. So here are some tips on ways of handling work overload:

·        Manage your time efficiently: I have noticed most of the time the top executives do not have control over their time management. They exactly do not know where and how much time they are spending in different chores. So here is the first rule, set up a maximum limit of your work hour. Generally 50 to 55 hours should be the maximum limit unless something very urgent comes up.  Now make a to-do list of work you need to complete in the upcoming week and allot time in different sectors based on the priorities and importance according to your strategy. In corporate world strategy is the key to success. You need to know which part of your project needs most focus, what needs to be done first, which tasks are the most essential ones and you have to set up your strategy according to that. Do not forget to allot some time for you to recharge yourself.

 You time is no less important than your money, as it says time is money. So manage your time in the same way you manage your money. Do not let them get wasted in ineffective activities.

·        Learn to prioritize: as I have mentioned earlier, you have to set up a very clear cut strategy of your work. You need to divide them in some groups and sub groups if necessary in your to-do list and then have to allot time accordingly. Often within time and situation the priority of some certain work comes before another. So you need to recheck and update your priority to do list time to time for maximum outcome.

·        Avoid time wasters: if you minutely pay attention to your daily official activities, I am sure you will find some works which you can easily tag as time wasters. Identify those works and eliminate those or avoid those works for ultimate efficient time management. Corporate high officials usually very efficient on making a to-do list, from now on make a ‘do not need to do’ list as well.

Again, if you take a look on your current ongoing projects you will find there are some projects that are going nowhere. Stop wasting time on these unproductive projects. If it is hard for you to decide which one is the most fruitless, ask your team. I am sure they will be able to give you a list of unproductive projects. Invest your time, energy and money on new ideas. The triggering line that you should keep yourself telling is that, energy is a finite resource and you must ensure the proper use of it.

·        Set up a limit and invest your energy within it: do not let you chase endless initiative, pace yourself and focus on the key projects only. If you are working under a boss who is not that efficient in setting priorities, value judge the projects outcome before investing your energy in it. Otherwise you will find yourself in the middle of a dead project where you have invested most of your time in past few weeks.

It is true sometimes it is impossible to avoid work overload, especially in the current scenario. That is why you need to come up with some ideas of managing work overload so that you can handle your workloads in most efficient and fruitful way.
