Ways To Help – My Favorite Way to Spread Goodness

21 December 2009 No Comment

Things happen and they happen for good. A decade ago, I had never thought myself to be in the position to help someone especially when I was struggling in this world for my own needs. I understand that people contribute to charities, give donations, and have set funds to help the needy but they are the league apart. I was also conscious of the fact that some people, irrespective of their current status, have developed a habit to give small portion of their salary to needy. This subject was not of my interest and I had never given a serious thought on ways to help people. To me it was either kindness or money for which either I had no time or resources. Not much was expected from a person who was studying at that moment and this was something that never crossed my mind either. Even if I ever had an opportunity to help, I used to take it depending upon my comfort factor. Through all these times, somewhere in my heart, I had guilt of not helping people and I was living with it with much ease.

But one night completely changed my life and my attitude towards helping people.

My sales job was killing me everyday and I was as helpless as one could ever be. I had no courage to leave it and sit idle because a break in a career is not perceived as good in industry. It was tough time and I was working hard to get into some job that did not involved sales. I wanted to get into research or consulting. I had less experience and that was preventing my resume to be shortlisted. One day I got a call from a good company and I knew it was a do or die for me. The written round went very well for me and I was called immediately for interview. Desperate enough, I was searching hard to know about interview questions and their hiring process. I joined some chat group to ask people on their thoughts and what I should study. During this time I got in touch with a girl who told me about the process and what I should study. She also told me the name of the e- book and gave a link to buy it.

But I was helpless. Few months in my job, I didn’t had the resources to buy the e-book. No credit card, no online account. I got to the point where I knew what I need to study but I was unable to buy it. Five minutes later the same anonymous girl asked me if the e-book is helpful. I didn’t answer at first but then I told her about my problem. It was late in night with only few hours to interview and somehow she could sense the pain in my words and tone. She offered me help. Yes, she did.

She offered to help me. I thanked her first and then asked two questions

1) Why you are helping me when you don’t know me

2) How I can repay back.

And her answer changed my thinking forever.

She said she is helping me because she thinks I am genuine and I can repay her by helping someone else in future who I think is in a same position as mine and need help badly.

She bought the book for me and mailed me. I studied the complete book in few hours. It did help me in interview and to get my next job.

But I was changed person.

How easily it was for her

1) To help me and spread the kindness.

2) To load my soul with a moral responsibility to help the needy.

3) To make me aware of the true meaning of the word help.

Yes, there are plenty of ways to help but this was unique.

I was indebted to her and to her generosity. That also completely changed my viewpoint about the word help and the deep meaning it carries. In simple words -help is about sharing something you have with someone who needs it most. You may not lose anything but someone might have everything to gain. What could possibly be the best way to help a person then by doing it for someone who is genuine and is in need?

And then I repaid her, not once but several times.

1) I helped students with books

2) I helped my fellow colleagues with difficult tasks

3) I helped needy with money.

And whenever anyone asked me how they could repay it back.

Continued Below.........

My answer was simple- Help people who are in need and you would repay me by helping them.

Yes, it changed my life and attitude about things one posses in life. Since then this habit is helping me to spread goodness and contribute my bit to this society.

So this was mine story on ways to help people and spread the goodness around. What’s your story?
