Weed Out The Weak

What does performance mean to you? Do you compromise with the state of affairs and let things work the way they are or you take up inefficiency very seriously and Weed Out The Weak. Anything that involved randomness is generally avoided by human beings. We love comfort and normal state of affairs and anything that go against it is something that is not preferable at all. Such behavior let the under performance to flourish as there is no attempt to weed out the weak. Inefficiency then affects other pillars of the organization and spread towards the roots. Soon the culture of the companies gets affected and any attempt to mend it is taken in bad spirit.

 

There are many reality shows aired on television where the central theme is to weed out the weak from the list of the contenders. The process continues for months and in the end they have someone who is the strongest of them all. The contenders are made to live in adverse conditions and the weak contenders get eliminated at every step. The concept is simple- let the best compete against each other. In a similar manner, the idea in organizations is not about eliminating people but to promote healthy competition. And if in this zeal something emerges as a hindrance it qualifies to be removed lest it affect the other parts and process of the system.

 

 The initial part has always been to acknowledge that inefficient people do exist in your organization and there is a need to weed out the weak. Let’s talk about this further and see its importance.

 

In any organization there are

 

1) About 10% best performers

2) About 70% average performers

3) About 20% below average or poor performers

 

Most organizations has a processes established where

 

1) Appraisals are done to stratify people based on their performance

2) Increments and perks are associated with it

3) The growth of a person is dependent on his rating.

 

While everything we have is in line to weed out the weak, but in many cases it seldom happens

 

1) We have people who are weak performers but still they manage to survive to the inefficiencies in the process.

2) We have people who are weak performers but they survive because of their proximity to the people in power

3) We have people who are weak performers but they survive because companies are too lazy to weed out such people.

 

The effects shows up when the menace spreads

 

1) Same people act as hindrance to the work of other people.

2) The performers gets discouraged when they see others getting rewarded out of no reason.

3) Overall productivity of the system reduces because of the weak links in the process.

 

And As a result

 

1) In efficiency spread in complete organization

2) The culture promotes inefficiency, politics and hatred.

3) It environment gets too suffocating

 

If you are looking for a growth within your team and your company it is very important to promote healthy competition. It is important that your team should know

 

1) What performance actually means

2) How performance gets rewarded

3) Why it is important for them to excel in healthy competition

 

Also you need to be prepared and ready to

 

1) Take those hard decisions

2) Make sure that weak gets eliminated or weeded out

3) The balance gets restored after every analysis.

 

Some decisions are tough but they are worth it. There is no point in establishing the appraisals system if there is no action based on it. Also it is important to eliminate the favoritism and judge employees by their mettle. It is this reasons only that organizations that display such qualities right from hiring process are most respected in the in the industry.

It is important to maintain a friendly atmosphere in your team but professionalism should always prevail. People within your team have the right to know what is expected out of them and how they would be evaluated at the end of defined period. An exercise to weed out the weak if done with right spirit is taken in right spirit within the team also. An impartial and transparent process has ability to do wonders for the team and organization as a whole.
