What Is Ethical Leadership


“Ethical Leadership” as the name suggests, if we take the literal meaning, it actually means, a leader with ethics. So, if one wants to know what ethical leadership is, one must first know who is a leader. A leader is a person in an organization or a game or in a group who leads. A leader is a person who guides the team to work together, in compliance to the rules and regulations, to achieve a common goal of the organization, on time.  

In order to find out what is ethical leadership, let us go through the following points.

 

·        An Ethical leader will be Quality conscious

An ethical leader will ensure that quality is not compromised upon in an organization as a tool to either cut cost or to increase profit from a product or service. A leader who is ethical will only allow a good quality product of its organization to rotate in the market.

·        An ethical leader will have care and concern for its subordinates

A leader who understands and feels for the subordinates working under him is an ethical leader. In this case, if we wonder what ethical leadership is, it is through this quality of an individual to make the subordinates and their work feel important, that a loyal worker is created.

·        An ethical leader will have strong communication abilities

An ethical leader does not practice incorrect or inappropriate use of communication methods to gain profits and applaud in the organization. He will never showcase a commendable work of one’s subordinates as one’s own. An ethical leader will never give false promises to its customers. He will fulfil all his promises given to its customers and his subordinates.

·        An ethical leader will have motivational qualities

One of our answers to what is ethical leadership is that a person who has this quality will have strong motivational power. Once a subordinate is aware of the ethical qualities of his leader, he will also be motivated to work and add more towards the organization’s goals. He does so because he is aware that his efforts will be recognized.

·        An Ethical leader nurtures more ethical leaders

A leader is not constant in one position in an organization. He needs to move ahead in the organization. He constantly builds and nurtures new set of ethical leaders in his path of leadership so that the trend that he has set in the organization is continuously followed and the rules are adhered to. A subordinate in order to get promotion and to get the position of his boss tries to follow the same guideline. The ethical leader is an inspiration to others. In the growing economies of today and to master the cut throat competitions, it is very easy to resort to unethical practices in regards to the sale of products, in regards to manufacturing of products or be it in the regards to striving in an organization. Even in one’s personal life, in order to have a work life balance, one can resort to false promises. An  Ethical leader leads and maintains the same standard of living at all places, be it his professional life, personal life or while meeting the society in general. He does not use unfair means at any point of time in his life. This answers our question what is ethical leadership.

·        An Ethical leader creates a reputation in the market

A leader who follows ethical practices creates a reputation for oneself as well as the organization in the market. The consumer is aware that if ethical practices are being followed then the question of cheating does not arise. Hence, automatically an upper hand is gained over ones competitor.

 

So, to sum up on the question what is ethical leadership, we can say that through ethical leadership, a person fulfils one’s social responsibility as well as legal obligations. An Ethical leader is a person with high moral and cultural values. We must thus follow these rules and create a better society for our future generations to come.
