Why Were You Fired

29 January 2010 One Comment

Ever wondered why were you fired recently despite being the best performer. It is very difficult to hear ones criticism and this is the reason that this article may not go down well with you. It is difficult to digest the truth but I would make sure to put my point across in the manner that it looks least offending. There are mistakes people make and there are mistakes that cost us our job. Things can be fine this very moment but tomorrow everything can change. You may do everything possible in this world to impress your boss but in end it seems that nothing has worked out. Getting fired is one of most unpleasant experience but if you happen to be one of its victims then it’s the time to do a little introspection.

Many people fail to realize that our superiors or Bosses are human beings too. We either take them too lightly or too seriously that it affects our growth. Human beings are driven by emotions and so are our Bosses. You pluck the wrong chord of one of their emotion and you never know what can go wrong. The relationship is so sensitive that it can break or make your career. You might be able to change one boss but things can happen in next job too. It is important to deal with your Boss in current job rather to hope for a better Boss in next job. If you are ready to make the difference in you rather your boss and stop blaming him for your condition then you are at the right path.

Below are the 5 mistakes that you should avoid at any cost. You need to strategically master this art in order to rise up the corporate ladder

1) Never make him feel Insecure- If you believe that outshining your Boss makes you look good in eyes of your boss and the higher officials then you are wrong. You can be a star in projects but when it comes to review and appraisals, it is your Boss who would sit with you. Making your Boss feel insecure is like inviting for unforeseen situations outside the preview of your job. Just like you won’t let anyone to get over your head, do you think your Boss would let any of his subordinate do that? Remember they are human beings too and any sign of insecurity can make them defensive

Why were you fired? Was this one of the reason?

What to do-Promote your Boss at your own cost and he would do his best to promote you. Never outshine him but grow under him. This approach has ability to take you far.

2) You are not indispensible- Thinking yourself to be indispensible and way above your Boss is the costliest mistakes one can ever make. You may the best in your field and posses qualities which are unique but you survive till the time you are in good books of your boss. A change in his attitude can make your skill redundant and your qualities unwanted. Yes, your knowledge is supreme till the time it gets valued and your Boss is the best person who can make it shine.

What to do-Treating your Boss to be indispensible rather than you and making sure to get things done in a manner that promotes him too is the best way to go.

3) Never underestimate him- It is foolishness to underestimate the boss and his knowledge. Non-Display of skill is in no manner an indicator of not having the skill at all. Some people are too novice to understand this and they think silence to be a sign of submission. Knowledge, skill, understanding, concepts, or anything you feel you have an edge over your boss then you need to think again. Boss is there, in that position, because of some qualities and you need to be mindful of that.

What to do-Work with Boss and make sure you have his support. Giving credit for success and asking for help at appropriate time gives him due importance.

4) Respect His Experience- Boss is there because of his experience and he is going to stay for the skills he posses. Making fun of ideas, ignoring the views, mocking the suggestions are some of the stupid things that employees generally do. You might think that your Boss got no experience, but it may happen that the perspective he has to offer may give the different dimension to the whole problem. Experience matters and this is the reason we are where we are today.

What to do -Acknowledge the experience and value the inputs. Always relate the success with the knowledge you got from your boss in order to make him feel important.

5) Mind your behavior- Is your attitude the reason as to why you were fired. Not respecting your boss, not being available when required, taking him too lightly can be some of the reasons that might have turned off your boss. Language is the biggest culprit in most of cases as words said cuts through the heart. You might be too close to your boss and can be on much friendly terms too but when things turn bad relationships doesn’t matter.

What to do-Give full respect to Boss even if you are very friendly with him. Behavior matters and you need to be at your best in every aspect.
